National minimum wage in detail
Employees have a right to receive the national minimum wage set in the Portuguese Labour Code and by the Portuguese Constitution. For mainland Portugal, the rate is set by the Portuguese Government (after negotiating with its social partners: employers and unions). The rate has been EUR 700 per month since 1 January 2018, taking into account additional payments for services provided, for example, a 13th month payment and other deferred payments provided by law. The rate is higher by 2% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and by 5% in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, but there are no other gradations to the wage. The minimum wage applies to all workers in the private sector. Starting 1 January 2019, for the first time, a specific minimum wage has been set for civil servants at a rate of EUR 740.83, taking into account the same additional payments as referred to above.
